The Technical Group of Battery Manufacturing is a project type group. This group has been conducting research and development to achieve high performance and large capacity of Li-ion battery from the time of group start. However the group is forced to modify the direction of activities due to ignition accident of battery. It will be studied hereafter how to contribute to the development of next-generation batteries which satisfy the conditions of safety, durability and low-cost.
Current level of technology, trend and activities in future
The demand for storage batteries is rapidly increasing due to the trend toward electrification of automobiles as a result of global emission regulations and the need to store electricity from renewable energy sources, and the battery industry is expected to continue to grow over the next 20 years. However, Korean and Chinese manufacturers are rapidly gaining strength in the area of general-purpose batteries, resulting in cost competition. Japan needs to establish new manufacturing technologies in solid-state batteries and next-generation batteries to compete in high value-added fields.
