Technical group of applied electrostatics was re-organized as a permanent group in 2011 with the name of technical group of electrophotography. Technologies related electrostatics of powder cover a wide range of applications, such as image formation, removal of fine particles, electrostatic powder coating, formation of functional thin film. For further improvements and innovations on such technologies, systematic research from fundamental to application are required from the view point of powder technology.
Current level of technology, trend and activities in future
1) Technologies of electrophotography have been highly sophisticated in the last few decades, but there is a continued demand for further improvements and innovations. Also several problems remain unsolved. Especially, the mechanism of electrostatic charging of insulating powder is not understood very well. For such further developments and exploring, information exchange of applied electrostatics in technological and engineering views is essential.
2) Electrostatics is important not only in such direct applications described above but also in general powder processes. Trouble shootings on adhesion and aggregation of powder or safety management on ignition of powder explosion due to electrostatic discharge are gaining more importance as particle size becomes smaller. New developments of material processing with powder controlled by electrostatic interaction is also important in both gas and liquid phases, because for fine particles dynamic control is more effective using interactions based on surface interaction more than that of volume interaction. With such respects, developments of safe and effective technologies of particle control using electrostatic interaction are challenges.
3) In this technical group, because of the view mentioned above, new topics of dispersion and aggregation of fine particles in liquid phase, and structure formation of fine particles to produce new functional materials will be covered in addition to conventional topics of electrostatic phenomena in gas phase.
4) For the sophistication of technologies of applied electrostatics on powder, the technical group corporate with Special Interest Group on Particle Charging Control, Society of Powder Technology, Japan to establish wide and active networking involving industry and academia from fundamental to application aspects of electrostatics.
